tumblr vs. wordpress — I am the reigning authority on this topic, according to Google.

That’s right, I’ve been playing around with “Google Webmaster Tools” (no, they do not teach you how to do this when you are getting a PhD in marketing {at least at FSU}) and my previous post http://drhorowitz.biz/index.php/2009/02/22/tumblr-vs-wordpress-not-tumblr-vs-twitter/ has the #1 position on Google when you Google “tumblr vs. wordpress“.  Thank you Google for making me feel like an expert on this topic.

Well, I’ve spent this Summer learning how to speak Internet (check out my delicious links if you haven’t been bombarded with them already via my rss) and have continued to use wordpress and tumblr.  So here is my update on the subject.

Tumblr – DavidMarkHOROwitz.com and WineHumor.net

  • Now that I know css, I have discovered how to hack a tumblr theme.  It’s pretty stupid easy to add commenting thanks to disqus and to use previously-developed jquery to add a wordpress plugin-like widgets.  But, it’s still much easier to just use wordpress plugins to do this.  That said, it does make you feel smart that you are using something different that just facebook, twitter, and wordpress.  Also, tumblr doesn’t seem to be linking to twitter right now.  Maybe the tumblr employees are not on a staycation like me, or maybe this is a strategic move by twitter against tumblr like apple’s move against the palm pre.
  • It is great that tumblr give you complete control over your page’s css.  It is unfortunate that wordpress.com charges $15 for customizable css.
  • The iphone app for tumblr makes it even more stupid easy to blog from your iphone.

Wordpress – DrHorowitz.biz and TheGlobalWineIndustry.com

So, in my expert opinion, I’d recommend using tumblr for you personal blog (like  Gary Vaynerchuk).  I think that personal blogs are going to become the new resume/landing page.  For more complicated matters, use wordpress.org’s software installed on your own server space.  If you have no idea what css is, use wordpress.com and pay the $15 when you figure it out.
