Promotion Management with WordPress
Still no drho.ro domain name…so I’ll be posting my http://s85473.gridserver.com/ links to SonomaMarketing.net in the meantime. Please help me 101domain.com!!!
We are going to use two of my favorite books to learn about the history and theory of promotions.
- Coercion by Rushkoff
- How Brands Become Icons by Holt
In order for you to learn about how promotional mix’s are going to be managed in the future, you should have a website of your own. Content management systems like WordPress are key to managing digital content, links, communicating across social networks, and getting noticed in search engines.
Managing a promotion is going to require you to work with designers or to do design work yourself.

What skills are you going to offer a company?
I’ve spent some time and the authors of Digging Into WordPress have spent even more time learning how to use WordPress.
I’ll be writing blog posts for this class in the promotion management category.
I’ll be adding these blog posts to the promotion management Spring 2010 page.
Freelancing is becoming more common, and you should have a website/blog you use as your resume/portfolio/bio–not just LinkedIn.
What are you passionate about? In addition to yourself?
Step 1: Buy a domain name.
- Do a Google Search on your domain name. Check to see if the twitter name is available.
- Get a coupon code
- Create an email account (you@yourdomain.com) through gmail standard apps.
Step 2: Buy server space (website hosting).
- I like/use Media Temple, but it’s a little pricey. Last semester students found justhost.com.
- Look for a coupon code.
- The only thing that’s critical for WordPress is that your host supports MySQL.
Step 3: Be ready to use Photoshop and iMovie.
- Photoshop is part of the Adobe Creative Suite. The computer labs now have Adobe CS4! We’ll be using Photoshop a lot this semester.
- Try doing a Google search on “how to learn photoshop“.
- iMovie is part of iLife and is on the computers in the lab. I also use FinalCut/LiveType, but the school computers don’t have this software.
- Check out the tutorials for iMovie on Apple’s website..
Step 4: Save your work!
- Get dropbox or another cloud computing backup service.
Next class: Logo/gravatar/favicon/icon design.
