Marketing research course topics

My marketing research classes contain my favorite educational resources on how to buy a domain name, start a Tumblr website, create a custom email address with Google Apps, use Tumblr, customize the HTML and CSS of a Tumblr theme, integrate your website with Google and social media, add social media buttons to your website, optimize your website for search engines, extend Google Analytics, conduct filmed interviews and focus groups, edit video with iMovie, conduct web surveys, create infographics with Illustrator and Photoshop, report results with InDesign and Fireworks, conduct Google Website Optimizer experiments, and record video screencasts.

Search Engine Optimization, inbound marketing, and search engine marketing are important new skills that marketing research students should understand.  There are great resources to learn these and other marketing research skills at SEOmoz, Lynda.com, Rockable Press, Tuts+.

I have taught marketing research every semester that I have taught at Sonoma State University.  I started out teaching this class with a textbook and only used the computer lab for a couple of weeks to teach students iMovie.  After realizing that students were learning the most in the computer lab I started spending as much time in the computer lab with students teaching them marketing research skills that they could apply to their Tumblr blog.
