How to create a podcast with wordpress–the Dr. Horowitz way.

It took me an afternoon of stumbling through google and wordpress to get my Wine Marketing Classes podcast submitted to itunes.  In order to for you and my future students to stumble less than I did I wrote this post on how to publish a podcast on itunes using wordpress!  The end result looks like: http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=329692326, which is where I’ll put my screencasts from my classes in the future.

Wine Marketing Classes

In the past, I had published a podcast on itunes using iweb and my .mac account.  Very simple, except I was stuck using iweb and .mac.

So, I googled “how to start a podcast” and was told to use the mac program “podcast capture”, which requires access to a Mac OS X server.  I called GoDaddy and they couldn’t help me, so I gave up on podcast capture.

Then, I googled “how to start a podcast with wordpress” and found the wordpress plugin called podcasting.

I started a new wordpress blog in the subdirectory http://drhorowitz.biz/podcast/ and installed the plugin.

It was a little tricky finding the podcasting field at the BOTTOM of the wordpress post interface:

This plugin is great!  It makes it so that the podcast file is automatically detected by feedburner with a little html:

[podcast format="video"]http://drhorowitz.biz/video/screencasts/Intro-to-marketing-day-1.m4v[/podcast]

Now that you have your podcast feed set up on your blog, go to feedburner.com and burn your feed (make sure to check the “I am a podcaster!” box).
podcast feedburner

After you have your feedburner url (http://feeds.feedburner.com/WineMarketingClasses), go to itunes–>podcast, click “Submit a Podcast” and in about 24 hours you will have your podcast on itunes!

I’ll try to keep my podcasts shorter and sweeter in the future!

I might also try to start a second podcast that’s in ipod/iphone format.  I could do this without starting an additional wordpress blog by installing the podcaster plugin on http://drhorowitz.biz/, but then each time I publish a podcast I’ll publish a new post.  I’ll probably end up starting another blog, like http://drhorowitz.biz/podcastforipod/.
